Understanding System Complexity in the Non-Destructive Testing of Advanced Composite Products

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a quality control measure designed to ensure the safety of products according established variability thresholds. With development advanced technologies and lack formalised knowledge state-of-the-art, National Composites Centre, Bristol, has identified that increasing complexity composite will lead some severe inspection challenges. To address apparent gap understand system complexity, formulaic approach introduce intelligence improve robustness NDT operations presented. The systemic high-fidelity base (KB) involves establishment capability matrix maps material, component, defect configuration capabilities limitations selected detection methods. Population validation are demonstrated through experimental reference standards evaluated against an assessment criteria. System in ultrasonic focusses on capturing inherent risks designation evidence-based path plans for automation platforms. Anticipated deployment validated applicability data within KB allow road-mapping technique provide opportunities knowledge-based decision making. Moreover, highlights need Design Inspection, providing measurable methodology should not be ignored.
